Description: Ayres Associates provided Bayfield, Wisconsin with digital, color orthoimagery services in 2015 as part of WROC. The aerial imagery was collected on April 28th and 30th using a Microsoft Vexcel UltraCam Eagle sensor mounted in a fixed-wing aircraft. Aerial imagery was collected to support 0.5 foot ground sample distance (GSD) orthoimagery to meet ASPRS Class II horizontal accuracy specifications at 1" = 100' map scale. The horizontal accuracy meets or exceeds 2.0 feet RMSE using the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA) standards. Resultant orthoimagery was rectified to a DTM compiled from the newly acquired imagery, with the exception of the area owned by the Bad River Tribe, which was rectified to a newly created LiDAR surface. Orthoimagery was delivered in PLSS section GeoTiff and MrSID tiles and a project-wide MrSID mosaic. The orthoimagery was delivered according to a section tile schematic. The total project area is 1512 sq. miles, plus a 1320 foot buffer around the county boundary. Geographic Description: Bayfield County is the northernmost county in Wisconsin, primarily located within the Northern Highland region of the state. Due to past glacial activity, the topography ranges from hilly in the northeast to flat pine barrens in the southwest. An abundance of lakes and ponds can be found in the southern and west-central parts of the county, while the northern border lies along the shores of Lake Superior. Approximately 48 percent of the land is under public ownership, including several areas of county, state and national forest and parks. With the vast amount of surface water and publicly controlled land, Bayfield County is an ideal location for recreational activities, such as hiking, camping, boating and skiing. While there are pockets of urbanization, including the cities of Bayfield and Cable, the City of Washburn serves as the county seat. Supplemental Information: The Wisconsin Regional Orthophotography Consortium (WROC) is a multi-entity group led by regional planning commissions (RPCs) and WROC representatives from Ayres Associates. The goal of the consortium is to build and sustain a multi-participant program to acquire digital orthoimagery and elevation data throughout Wisconsin. Orthoimagery was collected for Bayfield County in 2015 to provide consistent deliverable products and accuracy standards for each of the participating entities.
